Medieval Unit Reading List and Bibliography

The reading list may cover all or some of the novels, stories, plays, and videos depending on the time frame of the unit and materials available. Allow four to six weeks for this unit, which includes time to work on projects and develop a Parents' Night or Medieval celebration.

Bibliography

Most stories include study questions, crossword review or word find, and test. The reading list is designed to give students a wide range of information dealing with the Middle Ages. Students continue reading throughout the unit while developing a research paper and projects that become part of the Medieval Times Day celebration. Students use library materials as well as Internet links for their research.

Manila folder castle design - Draw the outside and inside of a medieval castle on a manila folder. Design, decorate, and color.

Medieval alphabet - Design or copy the early monks alphabet

Clothing and costume - Cloaks, gowns, tabards, surcoats, tunics, veils and barbette

Hats - men's and ladies with adornment

Hair adornment - ladies hairpieces

Dress models in fashions of the times

Shoes and boots - Make a pair of shoes or boots as they were in the Middle Ages

Embroidery with Medieval Patterns - Embroider designs on clothing or create needle point or cross stitch designs

Foods and recipes of the times - Prepare a food for Medieval Times Day or help prepare a royal feast

Jellies and Jams - Prepare a tasty treat

Games - Reenact a game from this time period; create game pieces

Medicines and the use of herbs - Make a collection of herbs and their uses

Make a mortar and pestle

Music and instruments - Prepare samples of music of this time period or make a musical instrument from this time

Dance - Research the medieval dances and demonstrate the dance steps or different dance styles

Shields - Design and build a battle shield

Coat of Arms - Design the family's coat of arms

Medieval weapons - Make a display of medieval weapons or recreate a weapon from the Middle Ages

Walking sticks - Design and build a fancy walking stick

Jewelry - Create jewelry of the times

Pouches - Make any of a variety of pouches from cloth or leather

Castle model - Build a three dimensional castle

Puppet show - Put on a puppet show using characters of the time

Theatre - Perform a theatre act using costumes of the times

Chess - Build your own chess board and pieces

Armor - Build or design a knight's suit of armor

Jousting - Make a display dressing the horses and/knights for battle

Flags - Make a herald's flag to carry during Medieval Times Day

Candles - Demonstrate how candles were made 

Stain Glass Windows - Design and create a stain glass window

Panorama - Build a panorama of a medieval village displaying the life style of the villagers or any event in Medieval history

Pottery - Mold a bowl, plate, mug, jar, etc. to create pottery of old

Wood carvings - Carve wooden utensils, farm tools, bowls, toys, etc.

Leather crafts - Create any item that was made from leather in the Middle ages - clothing, pouches, tankards, boxes, shoes, boots, armor, etc.

 

Research Topics

Research outlines are specific to a certain subject dealing with Medieval history and center around a definite theme. Each outline includes specific questions to be answered within the report. Students choose a craft project from the outline that reinforces the theme as well as a food project for Medieval Times Day. Students may also choose any type of Medieval attire to create and wear. Patterns and styles are taken from the Internet links provided.
