Crash opened in New York a month ago! I wanna see it, why isn't it here yet....

Apparently the film was banned in London's west side. They want two scenes cut out for British distribution. The one where he (James) has sex with the woman in crutches and braces, and the one where he says car crashes are fertile rather than destructive. They're afraid people will try to emulate the characters and go get in car wrecks after seeing the film. =) Yeesh. Seriously, I've long thought Crash is THE most erotic novel but I never once decided to get in a car wreck over it. There are other types of crashes. I've definitely had some pretty erotic non-machine crashes in my life. The crash can be physical, emotional, spiritual... Happens to everyone in one way or other and doesn't need to involve setting yourself up for it. All ya really gotta do is wait and you'll crash sometime soon.

The car crashes I HAVE been hurt in didn't do anything for me sexually.

Anyway, I've been sexually excited about this MOVIE for far too long now. A few years, I think. Joey had his excitement with Mars Attacks, I want Crash. Of course I'm afraid of being sorely disappointed because I loved the book so much but I do have some faith in Cronenberg on this one. NOT because he kinda/sorta, with much help from Burroughs' life, managed to adapt Naked Lunch. It's Dead Ringers that gives me hope. That was such a slow-moving, yet completely emotionally tweaking and wrecking film, that if Crash was done anywhere near as well it should be a good un. There you have it, Dead Ringers was another form of erotic crash. I also know a few folks who read the script (sniffle, I'd ask about photocopies but then I don't really want to be spoiled on the movie any more than I would be by knowing the book. They'll be different from each other, of course, they have to. Some of that you just CAN'T translate to film.) pre-production and said it looked good.

Checking the art circuits, hoping hoping hoping...

The New England Trash Culture Correspondent responds:

There have been a couple magazine articles/covers on "Crash" but i didn't notice where it played in New Yawk. Probably at one of the fall film festivals... a LOT of people here want to see it as well, not only 'cuz Ballard 's work is cool, but because this looks like the best Cronenberg film since, well, "Dead Ringers".

i had also awaited "Naked Lunch" but was mildly disappointed (didn't have high expectations -- how could they do even a modicum of justice to it?), except for the realistic '50s beginning which was dead-on. "Barfly" (based on Bukowski's writings) WAS extremely fine (waited years fer that one too).

Then again, what do i know? i've never had the luck to see any Jodorowsky films, even tho' i've read adaptations (Moebius) and books on the subject & i JUST saw my first Tarantino movie last night -- "From Dusk to Dawn" -- which was pretty GOOD. i musta been a victim of The Anti-Hype...

If George Clooney is half the badass he was in THAT film, he'll be the best "Batman" ever... =)

I heard about this movie too, and the Brits going apeshit on some scenes. Brits will do that. Fearful that young Brits may try to emulate such a thing isn't far off -- that's why Kubrick never allowed CLOCKWORK to open in England, because he knows those young Brits -- something's cool on the screen, they want to imitate it. Just a fallout for having lost their Great Empire. Why you think so many Brits come to the US and live? :)

Yup. Bruce made a "They wouldn't have to worry about it in England if..." comment this morning and I replied "They wouldn't have to worry about if they weren't all a bunch of bored, repressed, lunatics over there...."

Excuse me, some of my bored and repressed British friends are waving bombs at me and beckoning me over for that comment...

CRASH will not be released in the US until March 21, probably in big cities only. I've seen a Montreal rough cut bootleg with French subtitles and it's shitty quality but it's a totally amazing movie.

CRASH is fucking amazing. Totally fetishistic and obsessive and sex and death and aesthetics. MY fucking cup 'o the brew, fer shurr.
