OK, maybe i didn't read it that closely, but..... what are the implications of his comet? is it going to squoosh us? is it going to fsck us up? is it going to make the night sky pretty? is it going to expel two fragments which both are homes of intelligent civilizations of micro-organisms named Ricardo and Anne? Will the Earth obtain a mighty blue protector and a faithful, if pudgy, white sidekick? what?

Comet Hale-Bopp has a home page created by Russel Sipe.
http://www.halebopp.com/
There are great pictures, and loads of accurate information. Also, the entire "controversy" is detailed. Please note the "pro" and "con" emails. Of particular interest are the pro emails to Art Bell, and from J. Phinney of Mt. Palomar. In true scientific spirit, links are provided to web pages of controversy/conspiracy believers.

GENE! Didn't you read Jasmine's essay in Q ZINE 2?!??! Don't believe what the government tells you. Art Bell has been talking about the fishy Hale-Bopp Comet since 1995. Something weird *is* going on.
First off, I will tell you that I observed said Comet during its brief window last month in Borrego via high-powered telescope at Larry McCaffery's house, and I saw the "companion," and it ain't no star.
* "No, it's not!" of Shramek and a few supporters and the
* "Yes, it is!" of everyone else.
Did you listen to the Art Bell show Shramek was on? I did. He never claimed a thing. All he said was that there was a weird object behind the comet, and he made no thoeries as to what it was. He was asking people for their thoughts. *That's* when the madness started, and the attack on him and Art. Shramek came back on the air a week later, aghast at the attacks, and Art Bell was pissed because people were making assumptions. Chuck S. *never* claimed it was a ship, a doomsday device, or anything -- those people at The Farsight Institute did, as well as various "psychics," and "prophets." Shramek was more than willing to admit that it may have been a star since he is an *amateur* astronomer. Remember, he emailed the pic to Art Bell, and Art Bell called him and aired the story.
* radio talk-show host Art Bell, who, as illustrated by his
* WWW page, often touts such topics as crop circles, UFOs,
* and ghosts.
Art Bell is a genius. I am glad I have discovered him. He has saved my life. Since I do not sleep at night and stay up writing, I listen to him. Sure, he mostly talks about aliens, UFOs, rods, ghosts, crop circles, the Pryamids, witchcraft, etc -- but if he didn't, who would? Most of it rings true. Sure, he has nutty shows like 3 weeks ago with Pam and the "reptilian" aliens she was having sex with, but Art also has informative shows on Gulf War Syndrome, AIDS, new diseases, military cover-ups, and dreams.
Art never claims he believes his guests. He always maintains: "I let my guests do the talking and my listeners make up their own minds," instead of arguing semantics with his guests. Art has been known to make fun of certain guests the next night, so you know *he* thinks they are bullshit. He is also known to express some consternation and fear -- such as the case with the Gulf War Syndrome.
Whatever the case may be, Art is entertaining.
Do you mean you don't believe in crop circles, UFOS, and ghosts, yet read Sf and Horror????
* For starters, the star was part of the star-charting
* software he used: E.L.B. Software's MegaStar,
Why are profesional astronomers now saying there is an object, but possibly just chunks of Hale-Bopp broken off?
* Of course, debunking this false alarm
You just don't believe, you sinner!
* Additional "mystery sightings" have appeared, and the
* curious public hasn't been warned about possible
* confusion with normal cometary activity,
How about last week when CNN aired its first UFO report -- the object over Seattle, taped, that was travelling 1/100th the speed of light -- it stopped, and turned, and split.
* Combatting astronomical misinformation
Shramek is a victim of disinformation. just like all those who observe aliens, MIBs, moth men, and the other weird things entering our reality.
May Hale-Bopp bite you on your rear end!

* GENE! Didn't you read Jasmine's essay in Q ZINE 2?!??!
* Don't believe what the government tells you...
MIKE! For the record: I don't believe everything the government, scientists, or talk show hosts say. I never said anything like this. Also, I hope there has not been a mix up; I did not write some of the stuff you are responding to. When I responded to some material which you did not write, I tried to respond to "the author". But this makes things confusing, doesn't it? I will not post other peoples' writings in the future.
And last but not least:
A) I *do* believe in crop circles. I just don't think they are of extraterrestrial or metaphysical origin. I think people on earth are making them. Sorry, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I don't see why this makes me some sort of bad guy.
B)UFO's: I do believe there is something truly bizarre going on here. Are they space ships piloted by ET's, I think maybe. Time machines is another possibility. Another possibility is they are something our puny minds cannot even conceive of; that's why I think there is a danger in the "space ship" pigeon hole. On the other hand, I strongly feel the vast majority of sightings are natural phenomena, and only a small percentage are something remarkable.
C) Abductions: I used to believe this stuff. But, after as careful of a study as I was able to make, I feel the evidence is extremely shabby. What really bothers me is the large number of people who now claim to be abducted. At least one of the Abduction researchers has been highly manipulative of his subjects. IMHO, this stuff is of psychological and physiological origin. But, abductions are a remote possibility. I think we should be scientific about this; if good evidence is presented, it should be evaluated.
D)Government Coverups: Hell yeah. Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome are fine examples. The reason I believe? I don't care what the fuck anyone "tells" me; there is tons of scientific and medical evidence that flies in the face of shabby and misleading government findings.
Please note: all telescope and observatories are not owned by government institutions. This comet has been observed by thousands of trained amateur observers around the world. The fantastic claims about this object have just not been born out. This is not just me ranting. The vast majority of professional and amateur astronomers agree with me. I feel the universe is mind expanding, incredible, spiritual, incomprehensible and phenomenal. I just don't believe we have to make stuff up to make it more so.
* Do you mean you don't believe in crop circles,
* UFOS, and ghosts, yet read Sf and Horror????
OUCH! That hurt. And you forgot that I also write horror :( I hope I have
clarified some of my beliefs. But even if I did not believe in crop
circles, UFOs, and ghosts, I don't see what this has to do with it.
Arthur C Clark did not "believe in" any of this, and he is pretty
successful in the SF field.
And brace yourself...I saw a UFO! The place I live has been called "UFO
Alley" by advocates. I'll post about it sometime.
* First off, I will tell you that I observed said Comet
* during its brief window last month in Borrego via
* high-powered telescope at Larry McCaffery's house,
* and I saw the "companion," and it ain't no star.
Are you an amateur astronomer too. You've had better observing luck finding this comet than I have. The sky around here is incredibly light polluted. I have a C-8 from Celestron and little red Astroscan (by Edmund Scientific, it looks like a giant bong tube!). Hey, with some good arm twisting, you can convince me to lug the Celestron to the convention!
* Did you listen to the Art Bell show Shramek was on?
* I did. He never claimed a thing. All he said was
* that there was a weird object behind the comet,
* and he made no theories as to what it was. He
* was asking people for their thoughts.
Fine, this sounds like a fun and entertaining show. But, for myself, I don't think every extreme concept has to be taken to heart in order to make decisions in this world.
* Art Bell is a genuis. I am glad I have discovered
* him. He has saved my life. Since I do not sleep
* at night and stay up writing, I listen to him...
I used to feel this good about Carl Sagan. I'm glad your hero is alive, and hope you take the chance to thank him in person (or by mail) some time.
* Sure, he mostly talks about aliens, UFOs, rods,
* ghosts, crop circles, the Pryamids, witchcraft,
* etc -- but if he didn't, who would? Most of
* it rings true.
Sorry Mike, don't take this personal, but most of this stuff does not ring true with me.
* Sure, he has nutty shows like 3 weeks ago with
* Pam and the "reptilian" aliens she was having
* sex with,
Pam had sex with the alien reptiles, as well! That cheap slut whore!
* Art never claims he belives his guests. He always
* maintains: "I let my guests do the talking and
* my listeners make up their own minds," instead
* of arguing semantics with his guests.
Huh? He lets the audience make up their minds! Does he ever feature anyone with an opposing view? Did he read any of the letters sent to him by scientists about this comet? I'm not trying to be snide here Mike, I sincerely wish to know.
* You just don't believe, you sinner!
Well, at least I'm in good company. ;)
* How about last week when CNN aired its first UFO
* report -- the object over Seattle, taped, that
* that was travelling 1/100th the speed of light --
* it stopped, and turned, and split.
Fine: but this has nothing to do with Hale-Bobb, and I hope I clarified my beliefs, above.
* Shramek is a victim of disinformation. Just
* just like all those who observe aliens, MIBs,
* moth men, and the other weird things entering
* our reality.
If this man has been unduly persecuted, that's not fair! But as you have pointed out, some of the trouble has been caused by "psychics" "profits" and the Farsight institute. As I said in a previous post, some of the believers are their own worst enemies.
* May Hale-Bopp bite you on your rear end!
So far, nothing this comet has done is beyond the pale. I hope it grows to be a spectacular object, visible with just the naked eye. If it turns out to be a dud, well, so it goes. If it turns out to be a planet size space ship-- like in Rendezvous with Rama-- that's even better.
But OK Mike, if you insist, we will see in a few months who this comet bites on the ass.
Cheers,
Gene

* Possessed by The Shadows, Gene stated the following:
* A) I *do* believe in crop circles
I don't like the crop circles that much -- I like the much more intricate, geometric, shapes. But I don't get it -- if people are doing this as a hoax, why? What a waste of time. And if they are not a hoax, what the hell are they?
* B)UFO's:
I agree that UFOs can be something our puny minds don't understand. Many abductees ask the aliens, "Who are you? Where do you come from?" and are told: "You wouldn't understand." On the other hand, I'd dare say a great deal of these UFOS have "Made in the USA" on them. Remember that Crichton novel, SPHERE, where the Navy finds a saucer in the ocean, estimating it had crashed there 300 years ago, only to discover it was a USA spaceship from 50 years in the future that had been sent into a black hole? I've seen a lot of black triangles in the desert, and the British government just declared that the black triangles are indeed secret military aircraft.
* C) Abductions:
I have a theory on abductions: perhaps the growth of so many cases are a dip into the universal subconscious mind. Perhaps only a few of us have been abducted, and it was such a traumatic, powerful, and maybe even important event that it has been imprinted in the collective subconscious, and some of us are vicariously tuning in to the experience of others.
* D)Government Coverups:
Anything Newt says, I believe. He didn't lie about his campaign funds!
* Please note: all telescope and observatories are not
* owned by government institutions.
What's that one in Arizona that's owned by The Vatican?
* I'm glad your hero is alive, and hope you take the
* chance to thank him in person (or by mail) some time.
I actually get thru on some nights and am on the show.
I was just joshing around. I like Art because he entertains me at night.
* Sorry Mike, don't take this personal, but most of this
* stuff does not ring true with me.
Heh. I bet you don't believe the WEEKLY WORLD NEWS prints real stories, either. :)
* Pam had sex with the alien reptiles, as well! That
* cheap slut whore!
Not only was she having sex with the alien reptiles, she had 4 hybrid daughters with the greys. She gets around. You shoulda heard her description of sex with those reptilians -- how it whispers to her, has a huge cock, and leaves her sheets soaked in come. Now that's either one helluva reptile or she's going at it good with those fingers. There was also a caller who said there are gay reptilian aliens, and one was sodomizing him. "Romancing the Lizard."
* Does he ever feature anyone with an opposing view?
Yes.
* If it turns out to be a planet size space ship--
* like in Rendezvous with Rama-- that's even better.
One of the nights I got thru on the show, I mentioned how Hale-Bopp's companion sounded a lot like the asteroid object in Greg Bear's EON and INFINITY -- the ship/asteroid with cities in it, that lead into alternate demensions. Greg Bear is by far one of my favorite SF writers.
* But OK Mike, if you insist, we will see in a few
* months who this comet bites on the ass.
It'll prolly bite my ass. :) As long as those gay reptilians keep away from my ass.....I just don't swing with lizards that way, big scaly cocks or not.
