Cosanti is known for its beautiful brass bells and ceramic bells. Visitors to Cosanti can observe the construction of the bells. Even more interesting than the bells is the construction of the buildings.

Paolo Solari from Italy studied with Frank Lloyd for 1 1/2 years, then started Conanti. He designed cement roofs that were curved and inexpensive. Curved cement roofs can be thinner and still have ample strength. Solari shaped the desert floor with the curve he wanted for his roof and poured the cement over the curve. After the cement was set, he dug the footings, put in support walls for the roof, and then dug the unneeded dirt from under the roof. Another way to save money was to use sewer tiles for windows. Then Solari designed brass and ceramic bells. Both kinds of Solari bells are created at Consanti and many are one of a kind.

The Swimming Pool

When the above swimming pool was constructed, groups of three poles were set in the ground at the four corners. Then the roof was shaped on the desert floor. It had holes where the poles were located. After the cement was set, the roof was raised and pinned in place.
