Petroglyphs, ancient rock carvings by Native Americans, are found in the Waterfall Canyon of the White Tank Mountains west of Phoenix. These Petroglyphs were created by the Hohokam people between 500 and 900 AD. Most were carved in the blackened areas, desert varnish, of rocks. The meanings of the symbols is not known. The first group of photos were taken on the long loop of the Black Rock Nature Trail. Above is a sign explaining the Petroglyphs and a photo of Bob showing the desert area. Below are some of the Petroglyhs found on the trail.
![]() Halfway around the long nature trail is a .2 mile trail that intersects the Waterfall Trail. Petroglyph Plaza is located at the juncture the two trails. Some of the rocks look like an ancient newspaper.
