Course Description:  This course will clarify TQM processes and procedures and demonstrate how they can be used in the classroom.  It is an introductory course to teachers interested in implementing total quality management (TQM) in their classrooms.  Topics will include the TQM approaches of such quality experts as Dr. W. Edwards Deming and Dr. Philip Crosby; how TQM works with students, especially the "at-risk" population; specific ways to integrate the specifics of TQM tools into the classroom (based on modifications of the Malcolm Baldridge Criteria); and conditions that are necessary for successfully implementing TQM in the classroom.

Unit 3:  Basic TQM Tools

Unit 4:  SPC Control Charts

Unit 5: TQM Link to Educational Innovation

Unit 6: Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program

 


COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:    There are nine required assignments

 

Evaluation/Grade

 

The requirements for the course must be submitted individually through the internet via e-mail.  The class meets one weekend with the remainder of the requirements completed electronically.   The completion of an assignment does not assure receiving the grade point as assigned to the project.  The quality of work will be a primary consideration.

 

 

A grade up to a B can be achieved by satisfactorily completing these NINE REQUIRED assignments:

Select and respond to questions about any TWO TQM  gurus

Assignment 2

Select and respond to questions about an TWO TQM topics

Assignment 3

Complete a Quality Teaching Index on either your teaching or the teaching of someone you know or have known.  Submit a two page report that report that contains (1) your major strengths identified by the survey; (2) the major weaknesses you identified, and (3) a recommended action plan you might consider for improving

Assignment 4

Read and create a bulleted list of 45 items from a chapter in Peter Senge’s book, Schools That Learn (on course CD)

Assignment 5

Listen to three audio tapes and/or watch videos provided by the instructor.  Make a Top 10 List--a list of 10 things in the audio or video tape or on the web that educators need to know. 

Assignment 6

Submit five journal article reviews related to TQM in education (many articles are provided on course CD)

Assignment 7

Complete a research report on an educational innovation and how it links to Malcolm Baldrige Performance Quality Criteria

Assignment 8

Complete a project using the TQM tools and Excel

Assignment 9

Read and create a bulleted list of 10 items from each chapter in the ASCD book (on course CD) Sustaining Change in Schools:  How to overcome Differences and Focus on Quality

 


To achieve a grade higher than a B, completing one of the following assignments will earn you a B+, two will earn you an A-, and three will earn you an A

Complete one of six Total Quality Management Inventories for your organization or institution and write a short paper on your findings

Assignment 12

Select a book on a TQM topic and write a book report.

Assignment 13

Write a five page paper on one dimension of implementing TQM in an educational institution

Assignment 14

Complete another Assignment 1 on two more gurus (label this Assignment 14)

Assignment 15

Complete another Assignment 2 on two more TQM topics (label this Assignment 15)

Assignment 16

Complete five additional Article Reviews as in Assignment 6 (label this Assignment 16)

Assignment 17

Complete another Assignment 7 on an educational innovation (label this Assignment 17)
