The Endurance Sport's Page
I have been involved in athletic activity
which demands cardio-vascular capacity since my high school days.
I ran the mile in high school and in college (Northern Michigan).
I have been involved in Nordic Skiing since those early days as
well. I started out as a ski jumper and later took up cross country.
The bicycle has entered my training schedule too. I have used
my road bike to tour and my mountain bike to tour and race. I
have also been active in citizen road races (running) like the
Old Kent Riverbank Run. I like to keep fit. I am still active
to this day and do not plan to ever stop. I am an athlete for
life.

We run every weekday at Noon and Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 a.m.
Skiing: In the Winter, my passion is Nordic Ski Racing.
Running is still part of my training but, as Fall comes on more
ski-specific activity begins to fill the schedule. Roller-skiing,
hill bounding with poles, running with poles, upper body work
and, as snow comes on, skiing on golf courses. As soon as possible
(usually mid-December) we hit the trails which are groomed for
both classical and free-style techniques. The VASA Trail in Traverse
City is a favorite in the lower peninsula.
The race season begins in January.
There are some early races but, conditions are sometimes sketchy
so, January is usually a time when we can count on good (except
1998) snow conditions. There is a series of races called the Michigan
Cup. Distances are from ten kilometers to fifty. The VASA and
the White Pine Stampede are the most well-known of the Cup races.
The "Boston Marathon"
of nordic skiing is the Birkebiener, a 55 kilometer event
held every year in Hayward, Wisconsin. The "Birkie"
hosts seven to nine thousand skiers every year. That's a lot of
poles flailing about at the start! Here's a picture from the 1997
race:
