I have been very blessed with awards, recognition and opportunities. I was awarded The Michigan Heritage Award by the Michigan Traditional Arts Program in 2001. I've been a guest artist at The Smithsonian Institute's Festival of American Folk Life as well as The National Folk Festival and The Michigan Festival. My work has been featured in several books, including "Hands Across Michigan" by Alan R. Kamuda, "The Traveler's Guide to American Crafts" by Suzanne Charmichael, and "Crafts of America" by Constance Stapleton. My work has been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles as well as in TV spots-both in Michigan and across the USA. My carvings have also been displayed in various galleries and exhibitions. Yet with all this recognition and acclaim, I'm always amused and humbled when I recall a conversation with a Swedish artisan some decades ago. He watched me work awhile and then commented, "Some people do this carving in Sweden but not as well." I beamed and thanked him before he continued with, "Our wood isn't as good!" So here's to good wood and good carving; I hope you enjoy what you see here. |
